Summer in Vienna as locals…

10 things that locals do in VIENNA

Today, we're taking you on an amazing tour of Vienna, exploring some of the most fun and interesting activities this beautiful city has to offer during the summer months. And that from a local‘s perspective. We've got some hidden gems prepared that you don't want to miss. So, stick around until the end of the video!

  1. Hike and Dine in Lainzer Tiergarten:

Vienna has a cool place called Lainzer Tiergarten. It used to be a special hunting area for emperors, but now it's a big park open to everyone. Escape the summer heat and walk along many trails in the park. You might even see deer, wild pigs, and colorful birds while you're there!

Nestled within Lainzer Tiergarten is the stunning Hermesvilla, a former imperial residence used by the emperor's family during their hunting expeditions.

For a truly special summer experience, consider treating yourself to a meal at the HERMES Café Restaurant Labstelle. It feels kind of special if you can dine on the terrace of the former Emperors families villa. We actually revealed this hidden gem in our previous newsletter! 2. Enjoy Vienna's Ice Cream Scene

Vienna is a haven for ice cream lovers, and summer is the perfect time to indulge! The city has a vibrant ice cream scene, offering everything from classic Italian gelato to unique and innovative flavors.

Craving something Original Italian? Definitely check out Gelateria La Romana or Carlo Gelato.

For a more local Viennese experience, head to Eissalon Trento in Kaisermühlen. It’s our goto spot if we’re not in Vienna’s city center.

3. Experience the Summer Vibe of Donauinsel:

Donauinsel is a massive island in the middle of the Danube River, transformed into a vibrant leisure area during the summer months.

Beach Vibes in the City: We especially love Copa Beach, which has totally changed over the years. Now it offers a cool, beachy atmosphere, perfect for soaking up the summer sun. Grab some tasty tacos, sip on a refreshing drink, and feel like you're miles away from the city!

Explore on Two Wheels: For the active adventurer, renting a bike is a fantastic way to explore the entire island. Cruise along the Danube River, discover hidden paths, and enjoy the summer breeze in your hair.

Island Hopping by Boat: Feeling a little fancy? Rent a boat and explore Danube Island in style! Choose from a standard electric boat to sailboats for a touch of adventure, or rent a chic "swimming island" for a luxurious way to relax and soak up the sun. It's the perfect escape from the city bustle and will give you those true vacation vibes. Side note: You will find many boat renting facilities at the “Old Danube” in German its “Alte Donau”. Which is located right at the U1 Station “Alte Donau”. This is a unique recreational lake area the in the 22nd district attracting many visitors every year for lakeside walks, boating & water sports and summer bars & restaurants. This area is definitely a summer spot that the locals prefer.

4. Take a Ride on the Iconic Riesenrad:

Prater, Vienna's famous amusement park, might not be everyone's cup of tea. But even if you're not a thrill-seeker, there's still a reason to visit during the summer. The Wiener Prater is home to a true icon – the Riesenrad, the world's oldest Ferris wheel.

This well maintained giant wheel offers breathtaking panoramic views of the entire city, especially beautiful on a clear summer day. For a couple of years now they also offer a very special experience - It’s called Plattform 9. This is a special Ferris wheel experience where you ride the ferris wheel just with a rope attached standing on a glass platform. Perfect for those who want a little thrill and are not scared of heights.

5. Schönbrunn Zoo: It's not a secret that the Schönbrunn palace is a must-see in Vienna, but there's something even cooler right next door: Schönbrunn Zoo! This zoo is the oldest one in the whole world, and it has tons of animals to see. Lions, tigers, elephants, koalas, and even pandas. It is not only recommendable for kids, but also for adults as this is a place where your inner child gets excited.

We really like this zoo because the animals have a lot of space to move around. Of course, they would normally have more space in the wild, but unfortunately we have seen other zoos where animals are exposed to humans all the time without a possibility of retreat if they need some space.

6. Local Farmers markets on Saturdays

Vienna comes alive with vibrant farmers markets every Saturday! Almost every neighborhood transforms into a bustling marketplace, offering fresh produce, local treats, and handcrafted goodies

On Saturdays the famous Naschmarkt is also home to a great flea market.

Beyond Naschmarkt, there are many more markets which host local farmers on Saturdays. Check out Brunnenmarkt (featured in our Brunnenmarkt Food Tour video) or Karmelitermarkt in the 2nd district. Just remember, these markets are closed on Sundays, so plan your visit accordingly!

7. Explore the VIBE @ Donaukanal

Vienna isn't just about the Danube Island – there's also the amazing Danube Canal flowing right through the city! One of the coolest ways to experience the it is to go for a walk along the canal, starting from Schwedenplatz. During your walk you'll see lots of hip restaurants and bars – perfect for grabbing a bite to eat or a drink. But the coolest part is that the whole canal is like a giant outdoor museum covered in graffiti art!

There are all sorts of amazing pictures painted on the walls, and new ones appear all the time. It's a great place to relax, take a walk, and enjoy the summer weather. Don't miss out on seeing this unique part of Vienna!

8. Hike Through Vienna's Vineyards (Wine & Views Included!)
Looking for a scenic summer activity with a delicious reward? Then a hike through Vienna's vineyards is the perfect choice!
If you love wine and don't mind a bit of a climb, head to Kahlenberg. This picturesque spot lets you walk through vineyards and offers stunning views. You can either hike down from Kahlenberg or hike up from the tram station Nussdorf. Along the way you will stumble upon different wine taverns with amazing views of the city of the vineyards.

9. Coffee & Cake: A Sweet Viennese Tradition!
Vienna's famous coffeehouse culture is all about relaxing and enjoying a delicious treat. One of the city's sweetest traditions is "Kaffee und Kuchen" – coffee and cake! Almost every coffeehouse in Vienna serves tempting cakes alongside their rich coffee.

10. Vienna's Outdoor Cinemas:
Summer nights in Vienna are even more magical thanks to the growing popularity of outdoor cinemas! These open-air screenings are a fantastic way to enjoy a movie under the stars. Here are the 2 options:

    1. VolxKino: This major organizer puts on various outdoor cinema events throughout the city. One of their most popular events is Kino am Dach, a rooftop cinema located on top of Vienna's main public library. They screen movies all summer long

    2. Autokino Vienna: Looking for a unique cinematic experience? Check out the newly renovated Autokino Vienna! This drive-in cinema lets you enjoy the movie from the comfort of your own car – perfect for a cozy and nostalgic summer night out. Just remember, this spot is located outside the city center and obviously requires a car to access the area and enjoy this unique experience.
